Who’s Left: Top 25 Version
By Paul Myerberg // Aug 8, 2010

Not knowing that this list is alphabetical, Boise fans rejoice at their team's No. 2 ranking.
And here we are. Tomorrow marks team No. 25, with all the perceived cachet that accompanies a spot among the top 25 teams in the country. In reality, there’s little difference between team No. 25 and team No. 30; maybe a better resume of victories, or place in a strong conference, but little in terms of final results. We all know that’s hogwash. A top 25 finish saves jobs, creates extensions, boosts draft stocks, and so on and so on. So who’s left on the Countdown? Which teams are ranked betweens Nos. 15-25: good, maybe great, but clearly not a heavy contender? Between Nos. 8-14: great, strong enough to play in the B.C.S. but just outside the national title conversation? Nos. 1-7: the cream of the crop?
Again, these names are listed alphabetically, with the bottom representing teams already listed:
Alabama
Boise State
Florida
Georgia Tech
Iowa
Nebraska
Ohio State
Oklahoma
Oregon
T.C.U.
Virginia Tech
12. Texas
13. Miami (Fla.)
14. Wisconsin
15. U.S.C.
16. L.S.U.
17. Utah
18. Penn State
19. Georgia
20. North Carolina
21. West Virginia
22. Oregon State
23. Houston
24. Boston College
25. Stanford
What about by conference? Here’s how it breaks down:
A.C.C.: 5 (B.C., Georgia Tech, Miami, U.N.C, Virginia Tech)
SEC: 4 (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, L.S.U.)
Big Ten: 4 (Iowa, Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin)
Pac-10: 4 (Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, U.S.C.)
Big 12: 3 (Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas)
M.W.C.: 2 (T.C.U., Utah)
WAC: 1 (Boise State)
Conference USA: 1 (Houston)
Big East: 1 (West Virginia)
Any projections by loyal readers as to how the rest of this list will shake out will be readily accepted and appreciated. The individual who finishes closest to the final ranking — lowest combined miss total — will win a prize, one that the winner will surely treasure and cherish until the end of his or her days. Everyone should be able to nail No. 25, as the hint in the Auburn preview was a relatively easy one.
