The Countdown

A bottom-to-top assessment of the F.B.S. landscape heading into the 2012 season.

Need to Know

The 2012 Pre-Snap Read All-Name Team

The All-Name Team solidified its roster during the L.S.U. preview, giving us a 124-man list to cull through in search of a rock-solid starting lineup. And believe me: this lineup is superb – if perhaps hamstrung by the fact that there can be only nominee per team. But you know what? We’re inclusive, not exclusive, and every program in the F.B.S. deserves its own nominee. Besides, where would this team be without New Mexico State’s Love Dominique, Eastern Michigan’s Pudge Cotton and Western Kentucky’s Hendrix Brakefield?

The rules, if you recall, run as follows: each team nominates one player, as mentioned; the offense has 11 starters, with two receivers, a tight end and a fullback – we’re pro-style; the defense has 11 starters, running a 4-3 base set; and there is a kicker and a punter, but no long snapper.

Last time we checked, the All-Name Team needed a fullback, a new interior offensive linemen, some help up front on defense and a kicker. Did the coaching staff fill the gaps on the recruiting trail? Without further ado, the 2012 Pre-Snap Read All-Name Team (starters are underlined):

  1. Hokieshibe says:

I absolutely love the WR names… Philander Moore! Fantastic

  2. Dave says:

This has been a great read all summer – thanks much!

PS you cannot tell me there are not one but TWO defensive tackles with better names than Godspower Offor.

PPS Does Wave Ryder not get bonus points for the fact that he decided to attend the United States Naval Academy?

  3. gengiskahn says:

Hou could you possibly omit Nebraska’s I.M. Hipp and Duke’s Joe Bonecutter?

  4. BobJ says:

Priceless. What a great idea! Sounds like the stuff I come up with and when I tell my wife about it, she looks at me like she’s not sure this is the same man she married.

I do think Oregon’s All-Namer should have been Ifo Ekpre-Olomu (CB), with Andre Yruretagoyena (OG) a close second. Ben Butterfield makes me think more of Elizabeth Taylor than of a butter-fingered receiver.

  5. TJ says:

If I am not mistaken App St has a WR named BoBo Beathard….maybe next year

  6. Patrick says:

@genghiskhan … Pretty sure all of the players listed here are active players.

  7. Nick says:

The lack of Shamarko Thomas disturbs me.

  8. andrew says:

Absolutely classic that a dude named Tanqueray attends college in Utah. If only Tyrek Cheeseboro had decided to go to Wisconsin…
