230 Things to Occupy 230 Long Days

There are 230 days until Aug. 30, when a few lucky teams jump ahead of the curve and start the 2012 season on a Thursday, not a Saturday. And for that, the teams in question — I know Utah is one — earn our love and affection. But that lies way, way in the future, and the question now becomes how we fill our college football-free days. For 230 days, here are 230 ideas. Not all are possible; some of us are pretty busy, and the next time I do 230 things over 230 days will be the first time, I must admit. But nonetheless, the list:

    Alabama’s Upcoming Roster Overhaul

L.S.U. and Alabama met three times over a 461-day span: Nov. 6, 2010; Nov. 5, 2011; and Jan. 9, 2012. Even after last night’s disappointing loss, the Tigers took the three-game series. Each of those two victories were by a field goal, unlike Alabama’s 21-0 win in New Orleans, and the first, back in 2010, came in Baton Rouge. So does familiarity breed contempt? Not exactly. In the case of Alabama and L.S.U., close quarters — three marquee pairings in a year and two months — have only added another layer of respect to this long and meaningful SEC rivalry.

      Revisiting Last Night’s B.C.S. Predictions

I made several predictions heading into last night’s game, but only one was dead-on accurate. As projected, every fan in the country – outside of the Alabama fan base, still celebrating – came to the following conclusion about an hour after the B.C.S. National Championship Game went final: we’re 233 days away from the start of the 2012 regular season, and that’s a long, long time to wait. How to fill that time remains an unknown, but I’ll have some more ideas later in the week. For now, let’s revisit the pregame predictions and see how they played out.

“Big Boy Football” Is Alabama Football

If we hadn’t been here before, having seen Alabama and L.S.U. tussle in Tuscaloosa back in November, you’d think the B.C.S. National Championship Game was following in the footsteps of the 2001 Orange Bowl. High-grade offenses reduced to jelly under a defensive-themed onslaught; one otherwise stalwart, experienced team left flailing in frustration, unwilling to adapt to an opponent’s challenge. Offense? It was here, but with matching caveats. Against F.B.S. opponents not named Alabama, L.S.U. was averaging 36.8 points per game. Against F.B.S. opponents not named L.S.U., Alabama was averaging 34.7 points per game.

          Prediction Time: ‘Bama 20, L.S.U. 16, Etc.

I can see the future. Tomorrow, just a little after midnight, it will hit the majority of the country — all those fans not celebrating a national championship — that we’re about to enter the dark days. No major college football until Aug. 30, or 234 days from tomorrow. That’s a long, long time to wait. How will we make it? How will we last? What will keep us occupied over the months, weeks, days, hours, minutes and seconds that encompass the next 234 days? I have other things to predict: the score of tonight’s game, for example.

            Countdown’s Misses, Looking for Alabama

In 2008, I picked U.S.C., then led by a junior named Mark Sanchez, to win the national championship. “There is no question that if this squad plays anything like the team that dismantled Arizona State and Illinois down the stretch [of 2007), it will be the class of the F.B.S.,” I wrote that summer, when I was chock-full of energy and optimism. U.S.C. didn’t win it all that fall, nor did it even get the opportunity: the Trojans followed up a season-making win over Ohio State with a dreadful loss to Oregon State about two weeks later, and were not able to make up B.C.S. ground over the ensuing two months.

Jones, Ball Decide; Griffin’s Up Next

Andrew Luck will go, but Matt Barkley has already decided to return for his senior season. Yesterday, Oklahoma’s Landry Jones followed in Barkley’s footsteps in opting for one more year in Norman. “There’s still more to do,” Jones said in announcing his decision. That leaves only one elite underclassmen still undecided on his future plans: Baylor’s Robert Griffin III, he of the Heisman Trophy, and Baylor’s 2012 hopes lie in the balance. Jones’ decision was an easy one; he’d bottomed out, as did the Oklahoma offense as a whole, after Ryan Broyles’ knee injury on the first Saturday of November.

                P.S.R. Heisman Watch: Final

The votes have been counted, but don’t hold your breath waiting for any leaks. The actually tally will remain a mystery until a few minutes before 9 p.m. on Saturday, when the Heisman Trust will unseal the envelope and announce the winner of this year’s Heisman Trophy. The tally remains a mystery, mind you. The actual finish is most assuredly not a mystery: after months of seeing the Heisman handed to Andrew Luck, Baylor’s Robert Griffin III stormed to the forefront of the race in November and sealed a first-place finish by dismantling Texas on the first Saturday of December. The question now isn’t whether Griffin will win the Heisman, but rather by how wide a margin. And now, for the last time, This Date in Heisman History:
