No. 17: Ohio State

So, to recap. In December, five players are suspended for the first five games of 2011 for selling jerseys, pants, rings — just receiving improper benefits, in short. Ohio State goes on to win the Sugar Bowl with these five in place, which some people take umbrage with. In March, it is first reported that then-coach Jim Tressel knew of these N.C.A.A. violations nearly a year before but didn’t report them to the N.C.A.A. or his own university. Tressel is suspended for the first two games of 2011 — later raised to five games — and fined $250,000. In April, the N.C.A.A. releases its Notice of Allegations; Tressel doesn’t come off well. Tressel resigns on May 30, leading O.S.U. to name Luke Fickell the interim coach for the 2011 season. In June, would-be senior quarterback Terrelle Pryor decides to forego his final season of eligibility. That same month, O.S.U. vacates its 2010 results and goes on two year of self-imposed probation. Did I miss anything?

    Random Spring Thoughts: Ohio State

Using a combination of various computer programs and the Internet — a task nearly beyond my limited computing skills — I selected 25 F.B.S. teams at random. Teams lucky enough to have been randomly selected will be reviewed with several random thoughts as we enter the heart of spring practice. Up next: Ohio State, which needs five guys to replace five guys who stepped outside the lines.

They’re not replacement players, even if they are replacing, in a sense, five players who would otherwise factor heavily into Ohio State’s mix. The five substitutes stepping in for the tattooed quintet suspended for the first month-plus of 2011 are just that: substitutes. Like a substitute teacher, these five aren’t starting for the long term, just for now, for five games from Sept. 3 through Oct. 1, until Terrelle Pryor and his teammates return to action. It’s worth noting that in the suspended five’s stead, the new starters hold the key to Ohio State’s hopes of returning to B.C.S. play.

Tressel Digs His Hole a Little Deeper

We were recently entertained by the musings of the Orlando Sentinel’s Mike Bianchi, who voiced his opinion that Urban Meyer would replace Jim Tressel at Ohio State as early as 2012, when the latter’s missteps would force Ohio State’s hand in dismissing its national title-winning coach. Four days ago, the consensus — in this space and elsewhere — was that the support system in place for Tressel, one that included the university’s president and athletic director, was too strong to entertain the notion that this could be his last season along the sidelines in Columbus, five-game suspension or otherwise.

Eyes Glance Ahead to Oct. 8

The game itself doesn’t lack for intrigue, not when you have two title contenders meeting in a place as storied as Lincoln, with a coach like Bo Pelini making a homecoming of sorts against his alma mater and  two marquee programs meeting for the first time in more than a half-century. The fact that Jim Tressel and the five Ohio State players already sidelined by the N.C.A.A. won’t return from suspension until this week, Oct. 8, only ramps up the level of excitement surrounding this already-hyped event: come Oct. 8, the hype for Ohio State’s trip to Nebraska will be off the charts.

Who, What and, Above All, When

It doesn’t pay to lie to the N.C.A.A., not anymore, not when there are folks like those at Yahoo! Sports combing through your dirty laundry in an effort to get to the bottom of every story. In the case of Ohio State, a Yahoo! investigation revealed that those at the forefront of the football program — Jim Tressel — knowingly misled N.C.A.A. officials, and perhaps the O.S.U. athletic department as a whole, when the N.C.A.A. came calling about the status of five of Tressel’s players in December. Perhaps the most damaging aspect of the Yahoo! report comes in the following paragraphs:

            Buckeyes Do It For Themselves

The Big Ten can take some satisfaction in Ohio State’s Sugar Bowl win over Arkansas, seeing that the conference entered the game 2-5 on the bowl season. Prior to last night, the Big Ten’s sunniest bowl moment of January was likely a late pick-six that allowed Northwestern to lose by only a touchdown to Texas Tech — though the Wildcats allowed 45 points in the process. All’s well that ends well for the Big Ten, especially after the sour showing on New Year’s Day, but it is important to make the following distinction: the Big Ten will be proud of the win, but the Buckeyes didn’t do this for conference pride. Not even close: the Buckeyes did this for themselves.

Sugar Bowl: Ohio State vs. Arkansas

It’s a shame that this particular B.C.S. bowl has been overshadowed by that five-man elephant in the room: on paper, the matchup of this Arkansas offense and this Ohio State defense is perhaps the most intriguing of the B.C.S. season. It’s impossible to ignore the back story, however. Those five Buckeyes, the majority of vital importance, will dominate the headlines and the minute-by-minute updates up until the moment the Sugar Bowl gets underway, however, with solace only coming upon kickoff. Of course, the question remains whether those five — names like Pryor, Adams, Herron and Posey — can do the same, ignoring the off-field dilemma they face next fall and focusing only on what is to come over the next 60 minutes.

                Ohio State Looks to Regroup

If Ohio State is not ready for Arkansas, the Buckeyes will be in line for a rude awakening: Arkansas has the offense to storm out to a 21-0 first quarter lead, defense be damned, and cruise to another impressive B.C.S. win for the SEC. Ohio State can’t afford to let that happen, certainly can’t afford to have another nationally-televised meltdown in major bowl play. The biggest issue for the Buckeyes will be refocusing, ignoring the off-field innuendo and attempting to return to the status quo, the play that led them to an 11-1 finish in the regular season. If it means adopting an us-against-the-world mentality, so be it.
