Shaw vs. Garcia, Or Mere Lip Service?

Chris Low, who covers the SEC in fine fashion for ESPN, raised a very interesting point late last week: Stephen Garcia’s latest transgression, one that will sideline him for the first week of spring practice, doesn’t merely raise additional questions about his leadership abilities heading into the most hyped season in South Carolina’s recent history; it also gives his challenger, sophomore Connor Shaw, additional opportunities to unseat the team’s incumbent quarterback and makes these Gamecocks his own.

    Spurrier Delivers on His Promise

Six years after his highly anticipated arrival, Steve Spurrier delivered on his promise. It wasn’t a promise in the specific sense of the word: Spurrier’s introductory press conference included no guarantees, no assurances that his Gamecocks would be anything like the Florida teams that dominated the SEC for the better part of the previous decade. It was the promise his era held — South Carolina’s newfound potential — that has finally come to life, six years after Spurrier rejoined the SEC… at South Carolina, of all places.

      Cockiness: Not Too Bad, U.S.C.

This wasn’t South Carolina State, even if it wasn’t quite Alabama. On the other hand, you have to like what we saw from the Gamecocks in their 41-13 victory over Southern Miss last night: more solid defense, though not a perfect outing, to go with a great performance from the U.S.C. offensive line and backfield. Steve Spurrier has consistently preached a reliance on an effective running attack; perhaps last night showed that the Gamecocks have started to embrace this philosophy.

Where Have All the Quarterbacks Gone?

"Come back, Tim.. I mean Shane, come back! Shane! I meant Shane! Come back!"

Half of the programs in the SEC will break in a new quarterback in 2010, including, yes, Florida. Yet more than just the Gators will face a rebuilding process under center, as Auburn, Georgia, Mississippi State and Tennessee lost an experienced senior signal caller; Mississippi, due to poor draft advice, lost the services of Jevan Snead a year earlier than expected. What kind of talent does the conference return? Who will serve as the next generation of SEC quarterbacks? There may not be a seamless transition.
