Maryland Backs Off Initial Transfer Ruling

In a reversal of his original decision, Randy Edsall will allow three former players, led by quarterback Danny O’Brien, to transfer to another F.B.S. program without any stipulations. According to his new ruling, O’Brien can now transfer to any A.C.C. school in addition to Vanderbilt, where he would be reunited with James Franklin, his former offensive coordinator at Maryland. The same can be said of offensive lineman Max Garcia, who had the Commodores in his final two as a high school senior before opting for the Terrapins, and linebacker Mario Rowson. The central figure in this transfer saga remains O’Brien, who was a breakout star as a redshirt freshman in 2010 before taking a back seat in Edsall’s offense over the second half of last season.

    The SEC’s 2012 Non-Conference Schedule

Missouri’s non-conference schedule was supposed to include Miami (Ohio) and Southern Illinois, a pair that would have joined Arizona State to make up the Tigers’ three games outside of Big 12 play. The move to the SEC jostled those plans in more ways than one: not only did Missouri need to cancel its date with Southern Illinois, which coincided with its SEC debut against Georgia, but the program also needs to add a fourth game to match its new league’s eight-game conference schedule. For now, Missouri’s schedule lacks holes; the Tigers still host Arizona State, and have added a road trip to U.C.F., but two games remain in flux. As of today, Missouri and Arkansas, which has one non-conference date still open, are the only two SEC teams to have not finalized their 2012 schedule.

Spurrier’s Rules: No Smokers, No Fatties

Asked Steve Spurrier criteria for hiring asst. coach. Second on list: “non-smokers” Why? “Because it’s stupid. Smoking is stupid.”Tue Jan 17 20:58:47 via TweetDeck

First rule: be, you know, a good coach. Second rule: no smokers. Third rule: no fatties. This is Steve Spurrier’s must-have list when it comes to hiring assistant coaches, as told to The State’s Josh Kendall, who yesterday had the brilliant idea of querying Spurrier on his hiring criteria. It was a good time for the question, seeing that South Carolina revamped its staff with three new hires earlier this week, replacing a trio of assistants who have gone elsewhere since the Gamecocks put the finishing touches on the finest regular season in program history.

Three Days Later, 25 for 2012

This is pretty self-explanatory: as of now, prior to any late withdrawals to the N.F.L. Draft and unforeseeable coaching changes, here is Pre-Snap Read’s very, very early top 25 for 2012. How much movement will we see prior to September — or August, when the Countdown will reveal the real top 25 teams heading into the season opener? Quite a bit, I’d imagine. As of today, however, here are 25 teams I feel will rank among the nation’s best in 2012. You know the drill: each team gets a one-sentence breakdown; final 2011 ranking and 2011 records are also listed in parenthesis. Questions, comments and concerns should be listed below.

          P.S.R. 1-120: Final Re-Ranking

With the season in the books, here’s a look at how the country ranks — using the original rankings as the starting point, with the year’s results as rationale for any movement. The top 25 teams land a one-sentence breakdown. The rest? Not so much. Part of the perks of being one of the best. Think your team is too low? Feel another team deserves more credit, less credit? Let’s hear it below. It’s a delicate ranking process, but with the year completely in the books, this is as good as it’s going to get.

Even In This Career, 2011 Stands Out

Spurrier: “I told the guys, ‘Next year’s team, they’ll try win 12, because 11 has already happened.’”Mon Jan 02 22:27:12 via web

It’s not a matter of talent, though it once was: Steve Spurrier’s teams at Florida won in February, out-recruiting the rest of the nation’s elite before going to town from September through December. South Carolina, on the other hand, isn’t — and hasn’t, and won’t, by and large — win with talent, but with coaching. After beating Nebraska, 30-13, in the Capital One Bowl, the Gamecocks were able to achieve something that had never been done in program history: win 11 games. Heck, the Gamecocks had won more than nine games only once in program history heading into this season.

              P.S.R. 1-120: Week 15 Re-Ranking

With the weekend in the books, here’s a look at how the country ranks — using the original rankings as the starting point, with the season’s results as rationale for any movement. The top 25 teams land a one-sentence breakdown. The rest? Not so much. Part of the perks of being one of the best. Think your team is too low? Feel another team deserves more credit, less credit? Let’s hear it below. It’s a delicate ranking process, but with one games left in the regular season, this is just about as good as it’s going to get.

                Palmetto Rivalry? U.S.C. Ain’t Clemson.

This was a good barometer for where the two conferences stand in respect to the other: Clemson was 9-2, atop the A.C.C. Atlantic, and South Carolina was 9-2, second in the SEC East. Both teams started strong before hitting a recent road bump: Clemson opened 8-0 and South Carolina started 7-1 before each encountered a difficult patch in late October and November. There were period where each team was a central figure in the B.C.S. hunt. There were a few similarities, though if nothing else, last night’s result proves that all 9-2 records aren’t created equal; 9-2 in the A.C.C. is not quite 9-2 in the SEC.
