P.S.R. 1-120: Week 13 Re-Ranking

With the weekend in the books, here’s a look at how the country ranks — using the original rankings as the starting point, with the season’s results as rationale for any movement. The top 25 teams land a one-sentence breakdown. The rest? Not so much. Part of the perks of being one of the best. Think your team is too low? Feel another team deserves more credit, less credit? Let’s hear it below. It’s a delicate ranking process, but with mere weeks left in the regular season, things are growing clearer.

As if Picking the Teams Isn’t Hard Enough

I’ve never tried my hand at projecting the entire F.B.S. bowl slate; I have enough trouble with the five B.C.S. games, in my mind. But it’s worth a shot for one week, even if I mess up the various tie-ins, conference affiliations and so forth. Not to mention choose teams that end up staying home during bowl play. Well, here goes. Remember: those numbers signifying which team slots where in its conference are very arbitrary — to a point. The No. 7 team isn’t vaulting the No. 3 team, but No. 6 could be No. 4, No. 5 could be No. 7 and so on. And not every conference can meet its allotted bowl tie-ins; in that case, a substitute team is selected.

Ten Themes for Saturday: Week 2

Ten teams, themes, games and players to watch on Saturday. Pretty straightforward. And off we go:

“I’m not going to let Richmond beat us twice.” So says Duke’s David Cutcliffe, whose Blue Devils lost to the Spiders, 23-21, last weekend. One note: Richmond has beaten Duke three times since 2006. You can understand Cutcliffe’s logic, however, what with No. 6 Stanford next up on the schedule. The Cardinal are fresh off a 57-7 win over lowly San Jose State – sweat broken: none. The tale of the tape paints an ugly picture for the Blue Devils. Three touchdown underdogs, Duke lacks the offensive firepower to hang with the high-scoring Cardinal, let alone the defense to keep the Andrew Luck-led Cardinal within striking distance. What’s the bottom line? While a loss to an F.C.S. foe stings worse than any other, it’s quite possible that Duke will look even worse come the final whistle against Stanford. Projected final score: Stanford 52, Duke 17.

Forecasting the Big East in 2011

It’s an old refrain, but it continues to carry weight: Big East teams won’t impress in conference play, so it’s vital that the conference heavyweights make noise in September. And once again, teams like West Virginia, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati will have the opportunity to do so against opponents like L.S.U., Utah and Tennessee, respectively. Yeah, it’s an old, tired refrain, yet one that continues to carry weight. Can you blame the Big East for feeling maligned by the rest of the country? I’d be tired of being discounted, belittled, misjudged and overlooked, but the conference as a whole can’t really look in the mirror and like what it sees.

          No. 90: Rutgers

Rutgers was able to scale the mountaintop, but the program spent precious little time near its summit. I count mere weeks at the forefront of college football: that the Scarlet Knights got there at all is a testament to the jaw-dropping rebuilding job done by Greg Schiano, but it made last year’s slide – and an unimpressive nine-win 2009, if there is such a thing – painful for a fan base dreaming of planting their flag alongside the nation’s elite. That Rutgers has been lapped by several Big East foes – Connecticut went to the B.C.S. before the Scarlet Knights – stings worse, and even raises a once-unthinkable question: Is Greg Schiano just a builder, or can he get Rutgers to the next level?

            Random Spring Thoughts: Rutgers

Using a combination of various computer programs and the Internet — a task nearly beyond my limited computing skills — I selected 25 F.B.S. teams at random. Teams lucky enough to have been randomly selected will be reviewed with several random thoughts as we enter the heart of spring practice. Up next: Rutgers, a team taking everything in perspective.

Rutgers remains happy for the little things, like the wonderful news that Eric LeGrand, injured making a tackle against Army on Oct. 16, has been discharged from a rehabilitation center in New Jersey and can now undergo outpatient treatment for his spinal cord injury. That’s the type of good news not even a national title can replace, as those who first witnessed LeGrand’s injury, his painful battle through therapy and, earlier this month, the happiness he took in being able to attend Rutgers’ annual pro day can attest.

The Big East Unveils Its 2011 Look

Gather round for college football’s most beloved annual rite of passage: the Big East’s eight-team fight over the conference’s guaranteed B.C.S. tie-in. I’m not sure if beloved is the right word — perhaps universally maligned would be a better phrase, though that suggests that even those in Big East country are tired of seeing the conference thrown to the wolves in early January. Long story short: the Big East’s 2011 season has been released, giving us an early take on which team might make a Connecticut-like run towards next season’s Fiesta Bowl — or whichever B.C.S. bowl wants the conference champion. Or is stuck with, depending on your point of view.

Rutgers Opens a Window for Savage

When handed a scenario, Greg Schiano gave his former starting quarterback, Tom Savage, an altogether unsatisfying response: let me sleep on it. And so Schiano pondered the idea of granting Savage, a 2009 freshman all-American, his unconditional release. And pondered some more. And even turned down the would-be junior at first, denying his request to inquire with Michigan, Miami (Fla.), Florida and others about a potential transfer; this decision led Savage’s father to call Schiano a “dictator,” though that choice of word was a bit strong.
