No. 76: Purdue
By Paul Myerberg // Jun 16, 2011

Ten years ago on this past Nov. 18, Drew Brees-led Purdue clinched a Rose Bowl berth by defeating Indiana, 41-13, capturing in the process the program’s fourth consecutive Old Oaken Bucket. Oh, those were the days – that was the program’s high-water point under the since-departed Joe Tiller, who compiled an 87-62 mark over 12 years in West Lafayette. Purdue celebrated the 10-year anniversary of that momentous occasion by coughing up an 11-point fourth quarter lead against Michigan State, ending its slim bowl hopes, and put some icing on the cake by losing to Indiana – at home, no less – to cap an ugly, injury-laden 2010 season. That makes three straight losing seasons for a program that experienced 10 non-losing seasons during Tiller’s dozen years in charge, which is an unwelcome feeling for a fan base that waited a long, long time for teams good enough to challenge the Big Ten’s best.

A Grab Bag of Quarterback Depth
By Paul Myerberg // Apr 25, 2011
It was never a fair comparison: Iowa and Wisconsin both lost a senior quarterback, but the Hawkeyes have had a succession plan in place since 2009, while Wisconsin — prior to losing Curt Phillips — wanted Jon Budmayr to win the job, not have it handed to him. When Wisconsin revealed late last week that Phillips had suffered a setback in his recovery from a knee injury, it became clear that Budmayr’s time is officially now, even if this is how the quarterback competition might have eventually played out. As noted last week, however, this hurts the Badgers’ depth at the position.

The 2011 Spring Alphabet
By Paul Myerberg // Mar 11, 2011

I had grand plans of giving a series of storylines for each F.B.S. program heading into the spring, but after doing so for the A.C.C. I came to a few conclusions; one, no one was reading them; two, it didn’t make much sense, as by the time I got to the end — the Sun Belt — those teams would have closed their doors on the spring; three, doing 40 days of spring coverage prior to picking up the Countdown in early May was nonsensical; and four, the breakdowns called for more work than I was really prepared to do at this time of the year. So instead of going piece-by-piece throughout the country, I’ll just pick and choose as the days go by. For now, however, let’s break down the upcoming — at some stops in progress — spring practices as a child would: letter by letter.

Ryan’s Lines: Saturday, Oct. 30
By Paul Myerberg // Oct 30, 2010
For the second time this season, I step in for Ryan and pick five games with appealing lines. The last time I did so, I finished 3-2 overall; that tied Ryan’s best mark of the year while avoiding an altogether typical sight every Saturday: 2-3, 1-4, even 0-5 — once. According to my calculations, Ryan is far from the widget-winner he made himself out to be. Still, I should point out that he remains confident, maintaining faith in his own ability to locate winners among the 50-odd F.B.S. games played each weekend in October and November. Only a prior commitment — he said something about a Tony Robbins seminar in Las Vegas — prevents Ryan from attempting to lift his season record above .500; maybe, just maybe, we should all consider ourselves lucky. Perhaps Ryan needs a week to clear his head. Onto the picks:

Northwestern Just One Eying An Upset
By Paul Myerberg // Oct 23, 2010

Northwestern has been here before. Last November, the Wildcats took out then-undefeated Iowa, robbing the Hawkeyes of a national title run. Michigan State hasn’t really been here before, at least not in this generation. The Spartans are unbeaten, perfect, with an open road to Pasadena. You know what that means: upset alert. Cue the alarms, the flashing red lights and the disembodied voice from the command station — Northwestern is eying the upset, as are several teams across the F.B.S. on Saturday.

Ryan’s Lines: Saturday, Oct. 23
By Ryan Myerberg // Oct 22, 2010
Made up some ground last week after the previous week’s disaster: nothing wrong with going 3-2. It really should have been 4-1, but South Carolina blew an 18-point lead to submarine me. They say coffee is for closers; I’m feeling good about the second half of my season, so it’s time for me to get a nice hot cup of joe — and I’ll be bringing Paul his usual Starbucks order: Venti Orange Mocha Frappachino, extra caramel and cinnamon on top, side order of low fat-yogurt with granola. Paul then throws out the coffee and fills the cup with whiskey. Nobody expects a Starbucks cup to have whiskey in it, right?
So 3-2 last week… getting better, getting better. No question that this thing gets harder the further along in the season you are. I do have five games here that I think should take me to the promised land. Sadly, my promised land is .500. In the immortal motto of the Royal Air Force:
“Per Ardua ad Astra” — “Through hard work, to the stars.”
That’s where I am right now. Hard work shall get me to the stars. Without further ado, here’s this week’s five widget winners.

Purdue Faces Tough Big Ten Season
By Paul Myerberg // Sep 30, 2010

Once promising, Robert Marve's 2010 season ended after three games with a knee injury.
Is Rob Henry ready for this challenge? It’s a sizable task: at 2-2, Purdue needs all the help it can get in order to reach six wins and bowl play, a team goal heading into 2010. It wasn’t supposed to be this way — Henry was supposed to see the field in only a secondary role, in fact. Robert Marve’s injury, however, which followed an injury to leading receiver Keith Smith, has changed the tenor of a once-promising season. Now, with Big Ten play beginning next Saturday, the Boilermakers might be better off aiming for merely competitiveness, not the four wins needed to reach bowl eligibility.

Week 1 Viewing Schedule
By Paul Myerberg // Sep 4, 2010
This is all new to me, this Web site business, so I’m trying things out on the fly. In a perfect world, readership would be high enough on a Saturday to have some sort of open thread, one that would feature some nice banter, helpful hints from the comment section, big plays to keep an eye, and so on. Not sure if that’s going to happen. But let’s give it a shot! So here’s how I think it’s going to work: I’m going to list below the handful of games I know I’ll be watching, with the time each game starts, and I’ll update each game with some thoughts throughout the afternoon. Hopefully. If you’re a loyal reader, check in below with your early thoughts on a few games, what games you think we should all be checking out, especially if they aren’t listed below, and interesting upsets, big plays or shocking results throughout the day. If this works, great. If not, it’s back to the drawing board.
