P.S.R. 2010 Heisman Watch: Week 6

The numbers have been just too good: there's been a change atop the P.S.R. Heisman list.

Brace yourselves: there’s been a change at the top. The great Kellen Moore, the leader for each of this list’s five previous incarnations, has moved down to No. 2. Who has supplanted the Boise State quarterback? Is it the quarterback from Michigan? The quarterback from Ohio State? What about the running back from Alabama, the cornerback from L.S.U., the running back from Oklahoma? I can tell you who it’s not: the running back from Wisconsin or the quarterback from Stanford. Both those players have dropped off this list, though they both are capable of returning in some capacity before too long.

    P.S.R. 2010 Heisman Watch: Week 5

The statuette remains the same, as does the first name on the P.S.R. Heisman watch list.

Here we are, four weeks into the year, and little has changed on the Pre-Snap Read Heisman list: Kellen Moore still stands leads all comers, though there are several contenders with sterling resumes making a claim to the top spot. There’s that quarterback in Columbus, he of the touchdowns in three different fashions on Saturday afternoon. The past winner back to his old tricks in Tuscaloosa. Two stars from the Big Ten put together solid performances despite yielding the spotlight to their understudies for much of Saturday afternoon. There’s even a new face on the list, as you’ll see below.

      P.S.R. 2010 Heisman Watch: Week 4

For the fourth consecutive week, Boise State's Kellen Moore tops the P.S.R. Heisman list.

It’s been three weeks: some things have changed, some things have stayed the same. Kellen Moore, Terrelle Pryor and John Clay remain the favorites, as they were — in this space — at the beginning of the season. A few names have burst onto the list, a few names have disappeared, likely never to be seen again. That’s certainly the case this week, where at least one former leading favorite has seen the end of his candidacy. Has there been any major movement? Who cracked the top 10, who departed? Let’s take a look.

        P.S.R. 2010 Heisman Watch: Week 2

After one week of play, Kellen Moore continues to top the Pre-Snap Read Heisman list.

With one week in the books, the Heisman race is only just beginning to round into shape. We know a few things after the first weekend, however. Kellen Moore is the early favorite, thanks to his performance in Boise State’s 33-30 win over Virginia Tech. Terrelle Pryor was impressive in Ohio State’s win over Marshall, though the competition was far weaker than what Moore faced on Monday night. Mark Ingram’s chances for a repeat continue to plummet with each game he misses due to injury, while Navy’s Ricky Dobbs is hurt by his team’s defeat and his own battle with turnovers. Likewise with Oregon State’s Jacquizz Rodgers, who was largely held under wraps in his team’s loss to T.C.U.

          A Tough Road to Repeat

Mark Ingram heads to the sidelines, but his Heisman hopes remain alive.

Does Mark Ingram still have a shot at reclaiming his Heisman Trophy? Never say never, but it won’t be easy: Ingram will miss at least the season opener against San Jose State, most likely the marquee matchup against Penn State the next weekend, and perhaps the entire month of September. If Ingram simply misses San Jose State, no problem. That’s a tune-up game for the Tide either way, with Ingram likely to play only the first half and a series or two in the third quarter. He’d still put up 75-100 yards, maybe a score or two, but his output wouldn’t affect his Heisman candidacy in either direction.

            P.S.R. 2010 Heisman Watch: Preseason

The race for the 2010 Heisman Trophy begins a week from yesterday. Can you believe it?

With less than a week to go before the first Thursday of the year, and with plenty of teams, matchups and players still to be discussed, this seemed like a good time to unveil Pre-Snap Read’s initial Heisman list — Heisman Watch: Preseason. The list will be updated weekly, with last week’s totals, a discussion of the player’s most recent performance, season totals and an overview of the player’s year thus far. Now, the top 10 list has been listed along the right sidebar all summer — since P.S.R.’s inception, in fact — but since this will be a weekly post, likely dropping on Mondays, it makes sense to have an initial preseason list. Why am I explaining myself? Let’s check out the debut list.

              Battleground States: Midwest

America. The middle states. Green grass. Fields of grain. John Deere tractors. Rich Rodriguez.

Ah, the Heartland. Exporter of abundant harvests, land of strong values and work ethics, and home to not an insignificant amount of high school football talent. Though the Midwest does not quite match the production — in terms of top talent — as the Southeast, the region has acquitted itself quite well over the past five recruiting cycles, as my breakdown will show. So grab a brat, a cold Schlitz and come inside. And don’t forget to bundle up.
