P.S.R. Heisman Watch: Week 3
By Paul Myerberg // Sep 14, 2011
It’s often about the whole 60 minutes, from kickoff to final whistle. And it’s always about the bottom line: the entire year, all 12 games of 60 minutes — that’s 720 total minutes, even if a star factors into only half that time, if not a bit less. But you can make your Heisman run in a fraction of that time: five minutes, one minute, one series or even one play, as Denard Robinson did on Saturday night. Was he perfect? Not even close: three interceptions, not to mention several more passes than should have been intercepted. But when push came to shove, when Michigan needed him most, Robinson delivered. And then he did it again, and again, and when the final whistle blew it was Robinson 35, Notre Dame 31. That’s how you win the Heisman: with superb play throughout, yes, but also with indelible, highlight reel-worthy moments like those Robinson had against the Fighting Irish.

Nightmare Scenario Enters Stage Two
By Paul Myerberg // Sep 9, 2011
Alright, so we’re entering the nightmare scenario. You know, the opposite of the dream scenario, which was 2-0, ranked high in each poll and America’s new darling, complete with a seat devoid of significant heat. You couldn’t blame Georgia for dreaming that big when looking a season-opening pair of Boise State and South Carolina: intimidated, perhaps a bit, but also excited about the potential of reversing a two-year slide by notching two impressive wins. One down, one to go, and Georgia now needs a win in the worst possible way.

P.S.R. Heisman Watch: Week 2
By Paul Myerberg // Sep 7, 2011
It’s hard to drop completely out of the Heisman race on the season’s first Saturday — with one near exception, as you’ll see below — but it’s very possible to vault into the mix with a dynamic debut performance. Take the juxtaposition of LaMichael James and Robert Griffin III, for example: James’ candidacy took a nearly irreversible hit in Oregon’s loss to L.S.U., while a win over T.C.U. gave Griffin III a chance to move himself firmly into the conversation. James isn’t out, not yet, and Griffin’s not a keeper, at least for now. Both have several opportunities to make their case over the next three months: James to move back info the race, Griffin to maintain his early pace. Both also have a lot of work ahead if they wish to leapfrog into — or ahead of — the top three, which seems set in stone, barring injury or defeat.

P.S.R. 2011 Heisman Watch: Preseason
By Paul Myerberg // Aug 31, 2011
What a bore. Quarterback, quarterback, running back, quarterback, quarterback, running back, quarterback. That was the case in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, and that’s how it’s going to go in 2011: barring injury or an unforeseen slide, Stanford’s Andrew Luck will take home the Heisman Trophy. But the anticipation is the most exciting part of the race towards the Heisman, in my opinion, and remember that few – if any – thought Cam Newton would take college football by storm a year ago. Luck may be the front-runner today, and yes, the Trophy is his as long as he delivers. But there’s a Cam Newton out there somewhere; there’s a Heisman finalist – if not a winner – who has yet to make his mark. That’s what I’m excited to see.

No. 14: South Carolina
By Paul Myerberg // Aug 20, 2011
Let’s not allow what transpired during the SEC title game to cloud what South Carolina accomplished in 2010: yes, Auburn had its way with the Gamecocks, but this team still won nine games, a high under Steve Spurrier, and took home its first SEC hardware of any kind — ever. That’s the big story for U.S.C. in 2010, not the late losses to Arkansas, Auburn or Florida State. Regardless of what happened in those three setbacks, regardless of a second half to forget in Atlanta, the Gamecocks can hold their head high with what they’ve accomplished last fall. It’s also intriguing to consider the idea that South Carolina has turned that proverbial corner. There’s reason to believe that 2011 might be the finest season in program history: the offense remains largely intact, with stars in particular providing a superb one-two punch, while the defense returns most of its starting lineup. How will U.S.C. fare when expected to excel?

Another Freshman Star for U.S.C.
By Paul Myerberg // Feb 14, 2011

Marcus Lattimore’s impact on South Carolina was immediate and stunning: in his first season on campus, Lattimore provided the Gamecocks with balance on offense and a tougher, more physical mentality, helping U.S.C. to an SEC East title. The hope now, one year later, give or take, is that Jadeveon Clowney provides a similar boost on the defensive side of the ball. If the hype is to be believed, if Clowney can be a difference-maker from day one, the Gamecocks can start booking tickets now for a repeat trip to the SEC title game.

Ending 2010 on a High Note
By Paul Myerberg // Dec 31, 2010
We have two more bowl games before turning the page on 2010: U.C.F. and Georgia meet in the Liberty Bowl and Florida State and South Carolina face off in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. If the latter game sounds more delicious, it is; the Seminoles and Gamecocks are the runners-up from the A.C.C. and SEC, respectively, and each looks to end its season on a high note against a ranked opponent. Georgia just wants to avoid a sub-.500 finish, which would certainly mark the low point of Mark Richt’s otherwise sterling tenure in Athens. Plenty to watch, plenty to get excited about, even if the main course comes tomorrow.

2010 End-of-Year Awards: SEC
By Paul Myerberg // Dec 8, 2010

The last time an SEC team didn’t reach the National Championship Game, Reggie Bush was still at U.S.C.; his Heisman Trophy remained in U.S.C.’s possession; Vince Young was a junior at Texas; Urban Meyer was at Utah, or mere days removed from Utah; and Tim Tebow was a senior in high school. This continued excellence from the nation’s best conference might be tiresome, but it’s never boring. Now Auburn joins the likes of Florida, Alabama and L.S.U. as national title participants — can the Tigers match their predecessor’s success and bring another championship back to the SEC?
