The Importance of Florida State

Let’s get this out of the way: Florida’s not playing for a national title in 2011. Florida’s always aiming for a national title, meaning the Gators enter every season with gargantuan expectations, but this specific team, in Will Muschamp’s first season, doesn’t have what it take to run through the SEC without a blemish or two. Only two conference losses would be wonderful, in fact, and would leave the Gators at 9-2 entering the season finale at Florida State. And here’s where it gets interesting, and here’s where Muschamp might face the most important test of his debut season.

Taking Spring With a Grain of Salt

The line is so good that it’s worth sharing. In providing profiles of some of the lesser-known teams in the F.B.S., Bill Connelly at Football Study Hall gives statistical analysis of both the season past and what to expect in 2011 on both sides of the ball. In his Louisiana Tech profile, Connelly says the following about quarterback Colby Cameron’s spring showing in Sonny Dykes’ high-flying passing offense. In a wonderfully succinct summary of all spring game performances, Connelly says the following:

Spring game stats are completely and totally worthless, but… well, throwing for 275 yards and five touchdowns is still better than not throwing for 275 yards and five touchdowns.

Beautiful. And Connelly raises a delicate point for fans and objective bystanders alike: What can we really take from spring ball?

      Spring Storylines: Florida State

National titles hopes are back in vogue in Tallahassee. It’s been some time since Florida State held such realistic aspirations; you might have to go back to 2003 — give or take — to find the last time the program put together a team and coaching staff truly capable of running the table, even if the dedicated fan base was able to fool itself into thinking otherwise in the years since. This is a new era, one piloted by Jimbo Fisher and a talented staff, one propelled forward by a roster loaded with young, athletic talent. In short, it should be an exciting spring for Florida State. One can’t blame a hungry coaching staff, team and fan base for counting down the days until the Seminoles retake the field.

        Building a Well-Oiled Machine

These are potential-laden yet dangerous times for Florida State, which can revel in a rapid turnaround under Jimbo Fisher yet cannot afford to take its foot off the pedal. Extreme development has been seen on the field; off the field, the Seminoles are on the verge of landing the nation’s best recruiting class, depending where you get your rankings — this is a full-time effort defined, the type of year-long, non-stop work that typically leads to fantastic results.

          Our Signing Day Melodrama

He was untouchable. A once-in-a-generation prospect, according to coaches and recruiting experts, the missing piece of the puzzle for programs from coast to coast. He was coveted, a term more generally used in Victorian-era novels and only when discussing members of the opposite sex, not the 18-year old — perhaps only 17 — potential-laden prospect whose dominating high school career had those infatuated with his physical skills genuflecting in his living room, pulling out all the stops to land his signature. Two years later, he was gone: a dream unfulfilled for the player, a waste of talent for a coach who expected more, just another missed prospect laid to rest in the recruiting graveyard.

Ending 2010 on a High Note

We have two more bowl games before turning the page on 2010: U.C.F. and Georgia meet in the Liberty Bowl and Florida State and South Carolina face off in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. If the latter game sounds more delicious, it is; the Seminoles and Gamecocks are the runners-up from the A.C.C. and SEC, respectively, and each looks to end its season on a high note against a ranked opponent. Georgia just wants to avoid a sub-.500 finish, which would certainly mark the low point of Mark Richt’s otherwise sterling tenure in Athens. Plenty to watch, plenty to get excited about, even if the main course comes tomorrow.

              Top Spot Filled; Assistants Needed

Jimmy Johnson’s achievements prior to being tabbed as Howard Schnellenberger’s replacement consisted of three winning seasons over five years at Oklahoma State. Dennis Erickson went 12-10-1 over two seasons at Washington State before replacing Johnson in 1989. Butch Davis had never coached a game, nor Larry Coker, nor Randy Shannon. So why the to-do over Al Golden’s perceived lack of coaching experience, let alone his lack of success? Perhaps the angst has less to do with the coach, more to do with the assistants he has at his disposal.

                Mission Accomplished for Florida State

A very important note about Florida State in 2010: the Seminoles finished 6-2 in A.C.C. play. Why is that vital? Because Bobby Bowden — the great Bobby Bowden — never finished greater than 5-3 in conference action following the A.C.C.’s split into two divisions in 2005. If you know nothing else about F.S.U. in 2010, you know enough. There’s more to know, of course. You need to know that Jimbo Fisher has fit like a glove; that Mark Stoops, the first-year defensive coordinator, has his group playing inspired football; that there are many, many young players due to play significant roles in 2011 and beyond; and that — and this is also vital — Florida State will only get better.
