The N.C.A.A. Moves Fast on O.S.U.
By Paul Myerberg // Apr 25, 2011
There’s nothing more heartwarming than good, old-fashioned newspaper reporting, particularly when it involves public-record requests. We saw this coming in March, when news first broke of Jim Tressel’s failure to inform his superiors at Ohio State that he was aware of several instances of misconduct involving members of the football team. Reporters at The Columbus Dispatch have nailed shut the case that Tressel violated the terms of his contract in doing so, however, thanks to documentation unearthed in an article released earlier today.

Random Spring Thoughts: Ohio State
By Paul Myerberg // Apr 6, 2011

Using a combination of various computer programs and the Internet — a task nearly beyond my limited computing skills — I selected 25 F.B.S. teams at random. Teams lucky enough to have been randomly selected will be reviewed with several random thoughts as we enter the heart of spring practice. Up next: Ohio State, which needs five guys to replace five guys who stepped outside the lines.
They’re not replacement players, even if they are replacing, in a sense, five players who would otherwise factor heavily into Ohio State’s mix. The five substitutes stepping in for the tattooed quintet suspended for the first month-plus of 2011 are just that: substitutes. Like a substitute teacher, these five aren’t starting for the long term, just for now, for five games from Sept. 3 through Oct. 1, until Terrelle Pryor and his teammates return to action. It’s worth noting that in the suspended five’s stead, the new starters hold the key to Ohio State’s hopes of returning to B.C.S. play.

March 30: Tressel’s Working 24/6
By Paul Myerberg // Mar 30, 2011
Like an Orthodox member of some religions, Jim Tressel will be prohibited from doing much of anything on each Saturday from the start of September through the first week of October. He’ll still be working 24 hours a day, in his words, just over six days a week, not his normal seven. That’s quite a change for any F.B.S. head coach, one would think, the overwhelming majority of whom slave over the job without cease from August through December — if not later, if they work hard enough. The above quote, captured by Bill Rabinowitz of The Columbus Dispatch during Tressel’s spring press conference, captures some of Tressel’s chagrin at his recent missteps with his desire to make sure things don’t spiral out of control without his steady hand. He’ll keep working his tail off, but he can’t be there all day, every day. Well, he could, but I wouldn’t think Tressel’s going to take any more chances.

Tressel Digs His Hole a Little Deeper
By Paul Myerberg // Mar 25, 2011
We were recently entertained by the musings of the Orlando Sentinel’s Mike Bianchi, who voiced his opinion that Urban Meyer would replace Jim Tressel at Ohio State as early as 2012, when the latter’s missteps would force Ohio State’s hand in dismissing its national title-winning coach. Four days ago, the consensus — in this space and elsewhere — was that the support system in place for Tressel, one that included the university’s president and athletic director, was too strong to entertain the notion that this could be his last season along the sidelines in Columbus, five-game suspension or otherwise.

Meyer For Tressel… in 2012?
By Paul Myerberg // Mar 22, 2011
A brief blog post from the Orlando Sentinel’s Mike Bianchi has been receiving plenty of attention from around the college sports world, not merely thanks to Bianchi’s confidence that Jim Tressel is not long for this coaching world but due to his assertion that Urban Meyer will be his immediate successor. Bianchi’s not only confident that Tressel will be replaced – he’s confident that a change is just around the corner: “I believe Urban will be coaching Ohio State when the 2012 season commences,” says Bianchi.

Eyes Glance Ahead to Oct. 8
By Paul Myerberg // Mar 18, 2011
The game itself doesn’t lack for intrigue, not when you have two title contenders meeting in a place as storied as Lincoln, with a coach like Bo Pelini making a homecoming of sorts against his alma mater and two marquee programs meeting for the first time in more than a half-century. The fact that Jim Tressel and the five Ohio State players already sidelined by the N.C.A.A. won’t return from suspension until this week, Oct. 8, only ramps up the level of excitement surrounding this already-hyped event: come Oct. 8, the hype for Ohio State’s trip to Nebraska will be off the charts.

The 2011 Spring Alphabet
By Paul Myerberg // Mar 11, 2011

I had grand plans of giving a series of storylines for each F.B.S. program heading into the spring, but after doing so for the A.C.C. I came to a few conclusions; one, no one was reading them; two, it didn’t make much sense, as by the time I got to the end — the Sun Belt — those teams would have closed their doors on the spring; three, doing 40 days of spring coverage prior to picking up the Countdown in early May was nonsensical; and four, the breakdowns called for more work than I was really prepared to do at this time of the year. So instead of going piece-by-piece throughout the country, I’ll just pick and choose as the days go by. For now, however, let’s break down the upcoming — at some stops in progress — spring practices as a child would: letter by letter.

In Columbus, Playing In the Mud
By Paul Myerberg // Mar 9, 2011
Given the nature of his deeds, Jim Tressel might have gotten off easy. Yes, he’ll miss the first two games of this coming season. And he’ll pay $250,000 in fines, make a public apology for his actions and face a public reprimand from his employers, even if Gene Smith and Ohio State won’t have their hearts in it. If this is where it ends, Tressel and the Buckeyes can feel like they’ve dodged a bullet — though these penalties are self-imposed by the university, meaning the N.C.A.A. might still come calling.
