Rutgers Opens a Window for Savage
By Paul Myerberg // Feb 1, 2011

When handed a scenario, Greg Schiano gave his former starting quarterback, Tom Savage, an altogether unsatisfying response: let me sleep on it. And so Schiano pondered the idea of granting Savage, a 2009 freshman all-American, his unconditional release. And pondered some more. And even turned down the would-be junior at first, denying his request to inquire with Michigan, Miami (Fla.), Florida and others about a potential transfer; this decision led Savage’s father to call Schiano a “dictator,” though that choice of word was a bit strong.

The Worst of the Worst
By Paul Myerberg // Dec 1, 2010

If finishing first in the Big East is like winning a kicking contest with a one-legged man, finishing dead last — at least one full game behind the next-worst team — is like, well, a complete embarrassment. That’s where we find Rutgers, sadly enough: entering Saturday’s game at West Virginia, the Scarlet Knights are 4-7 overall, 1-5 in conference play, and thanks to a hideously ugly loss to Cincinnati two weeks ago has clinched the worst record in the nation’s worst B.C.S. conference.

Rutgers: Savage or Dodd?
By Paul Myerberg // Oct 3, 2010

With Tom Savage hurt, Rutgers turns to Chas Dodd.
The offense is atrocious. Tom Savage’s burgeoning run to stardom has been put on a hold, both due to injury and his own struggles: through four games, the sophomore has throw for 399 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions, all while barely completing half of his attempts. What’s the story here? Based on what we saw in 2009, this fall was due to be Savage’s coming-out party, the year where he puts the Big East — and the nation, potentially — on notice. It hasn’t gone that way for Savage or the Scarlet Knights, with yesterday’s loss to Tulane the program’s lowest point since its resurgence under Greg Schiano in 2005.

No. 53: Rutgers
By Paul Myerberg // Jul 12, 2010

Rutgers is a winner. Something strange has occurred on the banks of the old Raritan.
Howard, Florida International, Maryland, Texas Southern, Army, Connecticut, South Florida, Louisville and Central Florida. Nine wins, nothing to write home about. Has Rutgers achieved enough since 2005 where we can find fault with a nine-win finish? Absolutely. There’s nothing wrong with nine wins — the program won eight games from 1999-2002 — but two of those wins came against F.C.S. programs; one came against a two-win Maryland squad; one over a service academy mired in a 13-year losing string; and another over the worst team in the Big East. It’s time to hold Rutgers to a higher standard, one where nine wins is not automatically cause for a parade.

Battleground States: Northeast
By Ryan Myerberg // May 25, 2010

Our Dear Reader thinks Northern recruiting is doing just fine, thank you.
The most maligned part of the country with regards to college football is most certainly the Northeast. If it weren’t for Pennsylvania — and I have a feeling that most in that state would consider themselves in the Midwest anyway — college football would be even further down the totem pole of popular sports in the Northeast. Don’t they know that every Saturday they don’t watch college football, a kitten dies? Like the previously reviewed state of Illinois, a lack of interest in the college game has had a dire impact on the number of top recruits coming out of this region, excluding Pennsylvania of course. But hey, put on your bluchers, ladies — find a sweater set, grab an Iron City or a Yuengling in honor of our Pennsylvanian friends keeping this region afloat, and come inside for a closer look at Northeastern recruiting over the past five years.
