The Aztecs Get Help From the Pac-12
By Paul Myerberg // Jan 26, 2012
Consider the losses that San Diego State has experienced on the offensive side of the ball over the six months. Push it back to the last 12 months, in fact, and take into account the loss of all-Mountain West wide receivers Vincent Brown and DeMarco Sampson, each of whom exhausted their eligibility following the 2010 season. Late in July, the Aztecs’ receiver corps lost would-be lead target Dominique Sandifer to a knee injury, robbing the group of its most experienced and game-tested option. Who stepped up? Sophomores: Colin Lockett and Dylan Denso helped fill the void, along with underrated tight end Gavin Escobar, allowing the San Diego State passing game to keep humming along as one of the Mountain West’s best.

First-Year Coaches on Display in N.O.
By Paul Myerberg // Dec 17, 2011
Leaving New Mexico wasn’t the best choice of Rocky Long’s career, though his tenure with the Lobos only looks stronger and stronger with hindsight: U.N.M. has gone 3-33 since his departure following the 2008 season. But the best move of Long’s career came in his post-Albuquerque transition, when from among several intriguing opportunities Long chose the defensive coordinator position under Brady Hoke at San Diego State.

No. 44: San Diego State
By Paul Myerberg // Jul 20, 2011
Year one: lay the groundwork, increase depth, show progression on both sides of the ball. Year two: make a substantial improvement in the win column, leading your team into bowl play and, for a time, right on the verge of a national ranking. Year three: cash in. This was Brady Hoke’s blueprint, one he ran to the letter over his short stint with San Diego State, which ended in January when he assumed the mantle at his dream stop, Michigan. How in the world will poor, little, overlooked San Diego State ever survive without the architect of last year’s nine-win finish? It’s all over, right? Let’s just write off the Aztecs, return them to the bottom of the Mountain West and move on… right? Nope, not exactly. While the program lost its face, the Aztecs aren’t going anywhere in 2011. What about 2012? I have faith, but ask again in 12 months, just to be safe.
