The Year in Review: Florida St. (9-4, 5-3)

Imagine we live in an alternate universe, one where the University of Alabama system Board of Trustees can’t unilaterally dictate the ebb and flow of its athletic programs located outside of Tuscaloosa. It’s a difficult situation to consider, I know, but suspend your disbelief for the interest of this scenario. So it’s the winter of 2006, and U.A.B. reaches out to — nay, actually agrees to a contract with — L.S.U. offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher, who had just completed his seventh season as an assistant in Baton Rouge. The contract, which hovered around $600,000 annually, was very much in line with what Fisher demanded as a national title-winning assistant coach; in addition, two members of the U.A.B. community offered to pay half of his annual contract.

Three Days Later, 25 for 2012

This is pretty self-explanatory: as of now, prior to any late withdrawals to the N.F.L. Draft and unforeseeable coaching changes, here is Pre-Snap Read’s very, very early top 25 for 2012. How much movement will we see prior to September — or August, when the Countdown will reveal the real top 25 teams heading into the season opener? Quite a bit, I’d imagine. As of today, however, here are 25 teams I feel will rank among the nation’s best in 2012. You know the drill: each team gets a one-sentence breakdown; final 2011 ranking and 2011 records are also listed in parenthesis. Questions, comments and concerns should be listed below.

      L.S.U.’s Quest for a B.C.S. Era First

Only one team in the history of the B.C.S., Florida State, has bounced back from a title game loss to win the national championship in the following season. The Seminoles did so in the bowl system’s childhood years: after losing to Tennessee in 1998, F.S.U. beat Michael Vick and Virginia Tech to cap the 1999 season. Others have come close, such as Oklahoma and Ohio State, which lost successive B.C.S. National Championship Games in 2003-4 and 2006-7, respectively. No team has won back-to-back undisputed national titles since Nebraska from 1994-5; U.S.C. came close, but preceded its 2004 championship — since under some dispute — with a shared title with L.S.U. in 2003.

Gritty F.S.U. Win Will Carry Over to 2012

It wasn’t pretty. It was ugly as it comes, actually, befitting two impotent offenses matched with steadfast defenses, and was not for the faint of heart. The first pass to hit a receiver in the numbers should have been collected, signed, bronzed and placed in a Brinks truck for safe keeping en route to the College Football Hall of Fame. The first offensive line to protect the quarterback — let alone open up a hole or two — should have earned a $100 gift certificate to the closest Champs Sports. The first running back to reel off a run greater than 15 yards earned a get-out-of-jail-free card for his next error in pass protection, which was inevitable.

The Stoops Brothers Are Wanted Men

Mike Stoops will land on his feet. Two months after being jettisoned by Arizona amid a 1-5 start, Stoops has his pick of potential suitors: Iowa’s going to come calling, and Ohio State and Nebraska have already expressed interest. But there’s a catch for Stoops, who worked hard to land the job at Arizona and, it should be said, worked tremendously hard to lead the Wildcats into Pac-12 contention, disappointing 2011 season or no. Stoops is a wanted man, albeit as a defensive coordinator, not as a head coach.

This is B.C. Football in 2011

Boston College is out of embarrassing moments. That well has run dry. There is no lower this program can go. This is B.C. football in 2011: at home on Thursday night, against a power program it has battled on even ground since arriving in the A.C.C. in 2005, the Eagles were thrashed and throttled from sideline to sideline, end zone to end zone, in the ugliest 60 minutes of a year defined in woeful 60-minute increments. It was bad even when it was good, such as when freshman quarterback Josh Bordner led the Eagles on an impressive drive down near the F.S.U. goal line late in the first half — only to botch a handoff to Roland Finch, giving the ball back to the Seminoles.

I Think This is a Rivalry (For Now)

It’s one of the most unexpected rivalries in the A.C.C., even if the word rivalry should come with a disclaimer. What is a rivalry, anyway? Is a rivalry born via geographic proximity? Is it based on history? Or is a rivalry born simply through competition — hard-fought games, played with something on the line, decided by big plays not just once but several times over a period of time? See, you don’t think rivalry when discussing Florida State and Boston College, but the series’ recent history suggests otherwise.

As if Picking the Teams Isn’t Hard Enough

I’ve never tried my hand at projecting the entire F.B.S. bowl slate; I have enough trouble with the five B.C.S. games, in my mind. But it’s worth a shot for one week, even if I mess up the various tie-ins, conference affiliations and so forth. Not to mention choose teams that end up staying home during bowl play. Well, here goes. Remember: those numbers signifying which team slots where in its conference are very arbitrary — to a point. The No. 7 team isn’t vaulting the No. 3 team, but No. 6 could be No. 4, No. 5 could be No. 7 and so on. And not every conference can meet its allotted bowl tie-ins; in that case, a substitute team is selected.
