Indiana’s Search Takes the JUCO Route

The search is on for Big Ten-caliber talent, and no one understands the value and importance of this endeavor more than Indiana’s Kevin Wilson, he of the one-win debut campaign. There was a time, if you recall, when Indiana was the talk of the recruiting trail: Gunner Kiel, before committing to L.S.U. and before committing to Notre Dame – the latter is now official – was once a verbal lock for Bloomington, where he’d marry his sizable skills with Wilson’s history of turning his quarterbacks into Heisman-worthy stars. Kiel has long been off of Indiana’s radar, even if still on the Hoosiers’ minds, which has Wilson looking elsewhere for his quarterback of the future.

How the Conferences Rank, 1-12: Final

The rankings are in the books, for better or worse, so all that’s left is to tally the numbers. What follows is the F.B.S. conference breakdown in terms of average final re-ranking; included in this list are our four Independents, even if that quartet, by design, holds no conference affiliation. The listings include the average ranking, highest team ranking and numbers of teams in the final top 25 in parentheses. The SEC again rules the roost — even if the conference finally lost a B.C.S. National Championship Game, in a way — but the league was challenged all year for the title of deepest conference, top to bottom. One conference in particular made a strong case for being the best in college football.

Ohio State’s Foolproof Plan: Hire Meyer

There’s a splash of Earle Bruce, a dash of Sonny Lubick and a spoonful of Lou Holtz in Urban Meyer’s coaching D.N.A., but the coach who stepped to the podium at yesterday’s announcement in Columbus is all Meyer: gifted, often brilliant and always striving for perfection, Meyer is sort of coach who can turn pretenders into contenders and winners into the best team in college football. Such as he did at Bowling Green and Utah, two non-B.C.S. conferences programs who experienced nearly unparalleled heights during Meyer’s comet-like stay at each stop. And such as he did at Florida, where Meyer may have achieved the impossible: he took what Steve Spurrier had achieved at Gainesville and, perhaps, improved upon it.

End the Season Today, Not in January

Of all the comments, statements and releases being issued in regards to the developments in Happy Valley, it’s striking to see that the Big Ten’s lone foray into this massive issue involved nine words and kid gloves: “Because it’s an ongoing criminal investigation, we have no comment,” said the conference, via Big Ten spokesman Scott Chipman. You can call this being calm in the eye of the storm, but that’s off base. You can call it being honest, but you’d be only partially correct; while N.C.A.A. president Scott Emmert echoed the Big Ten’s point — “This is a criminal matter…” — even the sport’s governing body deplored the unmistakable horror and “despicable” nature of Jerry Sandusky’s alleged crimes.

Delving a Little Deeper Into the 1-120

Yesterday’s conference rankings opened a slight Pandora’s box of questions, largely over how specific leagues are impacted by the bottom-feeders — such as in the Pac-12, whose average ranking plummeted over the conference’s second half. And what of the divisions inside certain conferences? Theoretically, the SEC West should be the top-ranked division in college football. But the Big 12 is the highest-ranked conference, so what does that say about the SEC East? Let’s break things down a little further in each league: by divisions, the top half and the bottom half. Again, the listings include the league’s average ranking, the highest-ranked team and the number of teams in the P.S.R. top 25 in parentheses.

            How the Conferences Rank, 1-12

In lieu of the weekly B.C.S. and non-B.C.S. conference posts, here’s the entire F.B.S. conference breakdown in terms of average P.S.R. 1-120 ranking. It’s not entirely fair to include the Independents among the true conferences, seeing that there’s only four independent teams, but it does give a slight slice-of-life taste of where that quartet stands in the big picture. Again, the listings include the average ranking, highest team ranking and number of teams in the top 25 in parentheses. Without further ado:

            1. Big 12 (37.7, 6, 5)
            2. SEC (39.7, 1, 5)
            3. Big Ten (44.7, 8, 5)
            4. A.C.C. (48.3, 5, 2)
            5. Big East (51.0, 23, 1)
            6. Pac-12 (54.6, 3, 4)

Missouri Takes a Bold Step to the SEC

Missouri just wants to take its official visits, in my opinion. The Tigers gave the Big 12 a verbal commitment, but as we all know, a verbal commitment is nice but non-binding. Like your local five-star recruit, Missouri wants to test the waters, getting a taste of life in the SEC — and the Big Ten, maybe — before making its final decision. That’s the big message from last night’s seemingly never-ending meeting of the Missouri Board of Curators, who deliberated and deliberated before coming to the expected decision, granting Chancellor Brady Deaton power to explore conference affiliation.

                What Happens in the Heartland?

The Big 12’s disintegration is upon us, barring a last-minute Hail Mary. The SEC voted unanimously in favor of accepting Texas A&M into the conference, as expected, and that move sets the following Big 12 dominoes in motion, once all the involved parties clear up the legalese:

Kansas, Iowa State and Kansas State move to the Big East.

Missouri moves to the Big East or the Big Ten.

Oklahoma and Oklahoma State move to the Pac-12.

Texas either joins them, becomes an Independent or moves east, towards the A.C.C., perhaps; if the Longhorns choose a conference, Texas Tech comes along for the ride.

Baylor… Baylor does something — must do something other than threaten lawsuits.

And we’re left with a power conference to the left, an always-dominant SEC to the right, along with the A.C.C. and Big East. In the middle? There’s the Big Ten, at that’s it. So what happens to football in the Heartland?
