Q&A: Dan Wetzel

It’s a pleasure to speak with Yahoo! Sports columnist Dan Wetzel, whose book, “Death to the BCS” — co-authored with Josh Peter and Jeff Pasan — has been a conversation starter both in this space and elsewhere. No other book has so effectively highlighted the errors of the B.C.S. system, not to mention provided a valuable blueprint for a future 16-team playoff scenario. Over the past two weeks, I’ve led up to today’s Q&A session with posts about this projected playoff bracket; the math — or lack thereof — behind one of the handful of computer ranking systems involved in the B.C.S. formula; and even applied the playoff scenario to what we’ve seen thus far in the 2010 season. Dan was kind enough to answer a few questions about “Death to the BCS,” nailing home what I’ve been saying all week — buy this book.

    Q&A: OBNUG’s Kevan Lee

FedEx Field: where it all begins for Boise. A loss here permanently cripples any title hopes.

OBNUG, you say? Yes, OBNUG: One Bronco Nation Under God. Boise State has surely been a blessed group over the last decade, winning an F.B.S.-best 112 games, twice finishing undefeated and twice winning B.C.S. bowls. By all accounts, 2010 might be Boise’s best year yet. This is due to the experience on both sides of the ball — the 19 returning starters — and the way this team played last season. What does OBUNG’s Kevan Lee have to say about all this? Am I too high on the Broncos? Too low, if that were possible? What about Kellen Moore’s Heisman chances? I asked Kevan these questions and more, looking to get his perspective on Boise State heading into its battle with Virginia Tech on Sept. 6.

      Q&A: Eleven Warriors’ Luke Zimmerman

I asked Luke Zimmerman of Eleven Warriors about Terrelle Pryor, among other things.

My recent Ohio State preview predicted great things from the Buckeyes, though I fell short of projecting Ohio State as one of two teams playing for the national title in January. Was that a fair forecast for Jim Tressel, Terrelle Pryor and the rest of the Buckeyes? That’s a good question, and one I posed to Luke Zimmerman of the terrific Ohio State blog Eleven Warriors. That’s not all we discussed: I asked Luke what he thought of the Buckeyes in 2009 — were they better than most gave them credit for? What about Pryor’s Heisman chances? Ohio State also has a few position battles to watch: what does Luke think of brewing competitions going on at running back, wide receiver and free safety?

        Q&A: Stewart Mandel

Boise State, one of Sports Illustrated's four regional covers.

With Sports Illustrated’s yearly college football preview hitting newsstands today, this seemed like a logical time to ask some questions of S.I. senior writer Stewart Mandel, whose recent columns have touched on how the future of the Big Ten depends of its old guard, what makes U.S.C.’s Lane Kiffin tick and why Houston Nutt ranks among the dirtiest coaches in the country. What’s left to be discussed? I’ll ask Stewart his top 10, his Heisman guys, what to make of the N.C.A.A.’s new investigations and, last but not least, his national champion.

Q&A: Des Moines Register’s Randy Peterson

Iowa State's stadium won't change. The conference might. Randy Peterson weighs in.

As I spoke of last week, the projected conference realignment linking the southern teams in the Big 12 with the Pac-10 might leave the lower-profile teams in the Big 12 facing the possibility of losing their B.C.S. conference affiliation.

One such program is Iowa State, a program very fearful of its future should the conference disband. What is the university feeling as realignment talk reaches a fever pitch? What could the future hold for the Cyclones? To address these questions and more, I reached out to Randy Peterson, who covers I.S.U. sports for The Des Moines Register. I have questions, he has answers.
